How to play Neon Abyss 2: a side-scrolling run and gun roguelite with up to 4-player online co-op, unlimited item stacking, a Bar hub and a Training Room.
How to Play Neon Abyss 2: Controls, Runs and Systems
Neon Abyss 2 is a side-scrolling run 'n' gun roguelite built around one specific fantasy: you keep going deeper, you pick up everything you see, and the build you end up with is impossible to plan in advance. The official description is "explosive run 'n' gun gameplay, diverse combat styles, and unlimited item synergies," and the store page makes the key promise explicit — there is no limit to how many items you can wield. It supports up to four-player online co-op, and it has full controller support.

What kind of game is Neon Abyss 2?
Structurally, it is a 2D action roguelite — the Steam feature list tags it as Action Roguelike, Roguelite, Bullet Hell, Procedural Generation, 2D Platformer and Cyberpunk, across the Action, Adventure, Indie and RPG genres. The moment-to-moment play is twin-stick shooting where you move continuously and fire continuously, while dodging enormous volumes of patterned bullets.
The story framing is that you are struck down in New Athens and head down into the Abyss — a pixelated cyberpunk mythology world where you fight gods both ancient and new. That framing comes from Veewo's own console launch announcement, and it means in practice a Greek-mythology boss ladder rendered in neon pixel art, with the sequel adding Titans alongside the newer pantheon.
The combat roster is broader than a straight reskin-and-shoot. Veewo's own materials name three distinct archetypes: bat and saber melee, deadly plants, and commanding dragon-like creatures. That spread matters for how a run develops, because it means some Agents and weapons change your positioning and some change your whole screen coverage. Our agents list breaks down which character does what.
The Training Room added downstairs from the Bar lets you test any unlocked weapon against static, moving and multiple-target dummy setups. Learning a new weapon there costs you nothing, which is a much better deal than discovering its damage profile mid-boss.
How does a Neon Abyss 2 run work?
A run is a descent. You pick an Agent, you enter a floor, and you clear rooms while collecting drops. The difference between Neon Abyss 2 and most roguelites is the accumulation: because there is no cap on how many items you can hold, a late run is not about a single powerful item but about a dense web of things interacting.
Two consequences follow from that design. First, co-op changes the maths — the store page frames it as a way to "multiply each of your unique synergies" by playing with other people, and in co-op players can explore different rooms within the same map independently rather than being locked to the same screen. Second, bosses are built to stay fresh: the Creative Director has said each boss is now built around randomized skill sets, which means no two encounters play out exactly the same. A boss you have beaten twice is not necessarily the fight you get the third time.
The persistent layer is the Faith system, the sequel's headline new mechanic and the spiritual successor to the Wisdom versus Violence system of the first game. It is a resource you spend to turn the tide of a run, and it is documented well enough to be worth reading before you start — see the Faith system guide.
What is the hub and where do I test weapons?
The hub is a Bar. It is where you change Agent, check tasks, and get oriented before a run.
Two additions matter for a new player. A Training Room was added downstairs from the Bar, and it lets you test any weapon you have unlocked against static targets, moving targets and multiple targets at once. This is the fastest way to answer "is this weapon worth dropping my current one for" without spending a run on the question. The room arrived with the January 2026 Glimmer Heist update.
The other is the Targets board — a large triangular screen inside the bar that lists each boss along with the condition required to unlock it. That board is the closest thing the game has to a roadmap, and it is how you decide which god to go after next. Our boss list and unlock order compiles what is currently documented about that progression.
How do you play with other people?
Drop into a group of up to four, online, and split up to clear rooms independently. That independence is the feature — you are not glued to the same screen, so a party can cover more of a floor and pull aggro in different directions. The co-op guide covers what Early Access co-op actually played like, including the documented lag and desync complaints and what the developers have promised to fix at 1.0.
